When ordering gemstones for CAD designs or designing the piece itself, it is important to note a few things. Whilst gemstones come in all shapes and sizes, there are set calibrated sizes that are standard. This means that a design incorporating these standard sizes is far easier to source and with no recutting involved much cheaper.
When a request comes in for a smaller stone, such as a 1.1mm stone or a 1.3mm stone it is much harder to source such an exact size from our packets. The difference between stone sizes is so marginal, most good setters should be able to set stones within a +/- tolerance of 0.1mm. It also saves us plenty of time searching through a packet of 1mm stones, measuring each one- a task I wish on nobody!
When sourcing stones in shapes such as pear and oval it is better to opt for calibrated sizes. The reason being that they may be more difficult to source and a stone needed in a particular uncalibrated size may have to be bespoke cut.
Size tolerance can sometimes be an issue, most setters should be able to set stones within a + – 0.01. We would always recommend discussing any job in advance with your setter.
